  1. Camera inspect and locate

    A camera run documents the defect and its exact distance and depth, which is what makes a targeted repair possible instead of exploratory digging.

  2. Determine the repair method

    A single defect in otherwise sound pipe justifies a spot repair. Widespread deterioration favors lining or replacement, and the camera evidence is what decides it.

  3. Trenchless lining where suitable

    Cured-in-place lining creates a new pipe inside the old one with minimal excavation, which preserves driveways, mature trees, and hardscaping.

  4. Pipe bursting or open-cut replacement

    Where the host pipe is collapsed or badly offset, pipe bursting pulls a new line through, or conventional excavation replaces the run outright.

  5. Verify and permit

    The finished line is camera-verified and, in most jurisdictions, inspected under permit. Sewer work without a permit is a real problem at resale.

Is trenchless lining as good as replacing the pipe?

For the right conditions, yes, and it is far less disruptive. Lining works when the host pipe is intact enough to hold its shape, and it produces a jointless pipe that roots cannot enter. Where it does not work is on a collapsed line, a severe belly, or a badly offset joint, because lining follows the existing shape and will preserve the defect.

Who is responsible for the sewer lateral, me or the city?

In most jurisdictions the property owner owns the lateral from the building to the connection at the main, including the portion under the street, though this varies genuinely by municipality. Some cities own everything past the property line. Ask before assuming, because the difference can be several thousand dollars.

Will removing the tree stop the root problem?

Not reliably. Roots enter through defects in the pipe, and removing the tree leaves the defect, which the next nearby root system will find. It also leaves decaying roots in the line. Fixing the pipe is what solves it; lining in particular eliminates the joints roots use to get in.

How long does a sewer line last?

Clay and cast iron laterals typically run 50 to 60 years, Orangeburg fiber conduit often fails at 30 to 50 and is a known problem material, and modern PVC should last a century or more. If your home is on its original lateral and was built before 1970, the line's age alone is a reasonable prompt to have it inspected.
