Slab Leaks: The Failure You Cannot See and Should Not Ignore

A slab leak is a supply line failure beneath a concrete foundation. It runs continuously because the water soaks into soil rather than appearing indoors. Left alone it erodes the soil supporting the slab, which is how a plumbing problem becomes a structural one.
Where slab leaks dominate
Slab-on-grade construction is near-universal across Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, and much of Southern California, and common throughout the South. In those states slab leaks are among the leading categories of residential plumbing failure.
Add expansive clay soils, as in Texas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi, and the mechanism accelerates: the slab moves seasonally with soil moisture, and rigid pipe running through it shears at connections.
The signs, and the one that is nearly diagnostic
A warm spot on the floor with no heating source beneath it is the closest thing to a definitive symptom, and it indicates a hot water line. The others are less specific but still telling: a meter that moves with everything off, an unexplained bill increase, the sound of running water in a quiet house, and damp or buckling flooring.
Cold water line leaks produce no warm spot, which is why they routinely go undetected for months and the bill is the only signal.
Confirm before anyone cuts concrete
The free diagnostics come first. Run a meter test, dye-test every toilet, and shut off irrigation for a day. Those rule out the far more common explanations for the same symptoms.
Only after those come back clean is professional detection warranted, and it should always precede opening concrete. Detection costs $350 to $800 and routinely saves several times that by preventing openings in the wrong place.
Repair or reroute
A spot repair cuts the slab and fixes the failure. A reroute abandons the under-slab line entirely and runs a new one overhead, removing the failure category.
The spot repair is cheaper today. On an older copper system that has already leaked once, the reroute is usually cheaper over a decade, because the pipe elsewhere under that slab is the same age, same material, and sitting in the same soil. Treating the second leak as bad luck rather than a pattern is the expensive mistake.
One warning specific to post-tension slabs
Post-tension foundations, common in Texas, Arizona, and Nevada, contain steel cables under high tension. Cutting one is a serious structural event. Any concrete work on a post-tension slab must be preceded by scanning to locate the cables, and a plumber who proposes cutting without it should not proceed.
