A cleanout is a capped access point into a building's drain or sewer line, allowing a plumber to insert equipment to clear blockages. It is typically a threaded plug at ground level outside the building or in a basement. Opening a cleanout during a backup also relieves pressure, often moving the overflow out of the living space and into the yard.
Why access changes the price
A main line blockage cleared through an accessible ground-level cleanout is the cheap scenario. Without one, the plumber has to reach the line through a roof vent, which means working at height with equipment, or by pulling a toilet, which adds an hour and a reset.
