Why the first ten minutes matter more than the response time
A half-inch supply line at normal residential pressure releases roughly 400 to 500 gallons an hour. No emergency plumber, anywhere, arrives in under thirty minutes. That means the difference between a four-minute shutoff and a forty-minute one is several hundred gallons inside your walls and floors.
Almost everything that determines the size of a water damage claim happens before a professional is anywhere near the property. This is unusual among household emergencies, and it is why knowing your main shutoff is worth more than knowing a plumber's number.
The order that actually works
The sequence matters because each step protects the next.
Shut off the main water valve
Before investigating, photographing, or calling. Everything else can wait four minutes; the water cannot.
Cut power if water is near electrical
If water reaches outlets or the panel, kill the breakers. If reaching the panel means standing in water, call the electric utility instead.
Open the lowest faucet
This drains residual pressure and pulls remaining water down and out rather than through the break.
Move and lift
Get furniture, electronics, and absorbent materials out of the water path.
Photograph before cleanup
Wide shots, close-ups, and the water line on the wall. Cleanup destroys the evidence adjusters work from.
Then call
Describe it accurately: what failed, whether the water is off, and whether other fixtures are affected.
